Sat One recently exhibited new work for his recent solo show titled “Chromolog” at Firstlines Gallery in Munich Germany. Sat One has established himself as a premier muralist. He takes time away from painting walls and focuses his attention on canvas. Abstract at first glance, but as you look closer or as you step away in Sat One’s case the picture shows itself. Form is hidden in intersecting colors, composition gives way to shapes of soft geometry. This soft geometry is one of my favorite part of Sat One’s work, scaled down to a canvas size the details create patterns. These patterns accidental in nature at at times resemble microscopic landscapes, and at distance resonating shapes of color. It is the earthly palette and clean execution that pull the work all together. A great showing of work from Sat One. Congrats! Show summary below.
GF
“Sat One was born in 1977 in Venezuela and grew up in Munich. A trained graphic designer discovered early his interest in graffiti, but steadily developed a style that denies remote historically evolved forms and imagery, the supposedly superficial beauty. Sat One designed with its non-Euclidean geometric abstractions and futuristic-looking forms a formal but not tangible world, a world in which the spatial effect exists but is not predetermined by classical laws of physics in severity. Sat One tightrope walk between clarity and futuristic constructivist rejection of classical ideas recites defined geometry, microscopic forms, visualizes bold visionary unphysical or ban, in the style of classic science fiction, fantasy and reality to hyperspace on canvas. Sat One appears with its complexity and its precision as an architect of a parallel existing reality, in which the physical form of their building materials, away from earthly gravity, manifesting only in their combination.
Space without dimension, shape, without mass and time are not necessarily linear – the strange and inscrutable, incomprehensible remains immanent and accompanied us on imaginary journeys.”

We came across the work of Italian artist Sago and we wanted to share his work with you. Sago paints with a clean precise sense of form. His graffiti is a nice cross of representational graffiti with abstract and minimal elements. The artist tends to work in colorful palettes with high contrast. Neon like color palettes to simple black and white renderings, he impresses us with his style and use of color. With floating forms and an excellent use of soft and hard shapes Sago builds a great base for his letter form. He also works on canvas and takes a more abstract approach with these works. You can still see his touch of color and sense of atmosphere in his paintings. Sago is a well rounded and talented artist. We will make sure to share future projects from the artist with you. Here is a brief bio about the artist below.
GF
“Born in Italy, Sago hit the first wall in 1993 at the age of ten. Since then he painted constantly until 1999, when he stopped and concentrated on his university studies in Landscape Architecture; after traveling extensively through Asia and Australia, he came back to aerosols in 2008. Based on the belief that value of contemporary art stands not in the final product but in the idea and in the several steps that generated it, his work tries to tell the story of a continuous process, and this must be the key of lecture approaching both to the typographic studies he makes on walls and the abstract layers he composes on canvases: results of the same process on different surfaces. In 2010 he founded Archigraff, a collective of artists that features RUSL, AROE, ECB, TASEK, SOBEK, KCIS, NYCHOS, STORM, RIFLE, PIXELJUICE, WANY and DERS. It focuses its attentions on urban regeneration proposing art as a solution for visual pollution in the contemporary city.”

French Artist Hopare has been busy painting new walls. Here is a brief compilation of his most recent work. We were first drawn to Hopare’s graffiti pieces. It is now interesting to watch the artist push more character based themes in his work. We look forward to watching Hopare mix it up with narrative as well as letter based work.

One9 is one of those artists that slips under the radar of the culture, a virtuoso of many skills and interests whom Ive known for some 12 years now. In that time I have come to appreciate his journey and early history in the Washington DC graffiti scene, one which is often overlooked but relevant int the annals of our culture. He shares some recent works and some thoughts with us at Graffuturism.
GF – Your new works are crossing back and forth from expressionistic painting and modernist hard lined compositions, where are you finding the most comfort with the styles of painting?
One9-I would say I feel most free when the work feels raw and unfinished. I find a balance of laying down hard lines and breaking them wide open so there are no boundaries that limit aggression. Like Tiger stalking deer, there is a calmness that comes with the approach of layering the line work down then unloading animal instinct in breaking apart structure and limits.
GF- The paintings are devoid of any reference to your background in graffiti, is this intentional or do you hide it in the layering of paint?
One9 – I would say there is still references to my graff background in the way the lines have structural forms similar to the way I used to draw my letters out. In this case there aren’t any letters just free form connections using hard cuts and negative space.
GF – If there is a reference point of influence that is inspiring this type of work what is it?
One9 – Actually, this is how I used to paint growing up. There is a sense of freedom that comes with painting from the gut with a sense of history that I grew up with..I grew up in the DC area in the 80′s in a household where my father played allot of Mozart, Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Perterson. I would go from one room listening to what he played into my own zone where I would draw and a paint while I listened to UltraMagnetics, Trouble Funk, Rare Essence, Mantronix, etc.. I would also have out some books out of Jackson Pollock paintings, Da Vinci sketches, few images of Phase 2′s IGT zine, some Vaughn Bode and watch ABC’s Wide World of Sport. “The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat” Combing this elixir of sport, art. sound and raw aggression I felt totally unfiltered and free with my work. After my father past a few years ago I went back and started playing allot of the classical music again and starting painting with that sense of freedom I had growing up. Now, I paint with balance using negative space, mixed with the aggressive line work that I’ve learned over the years. Feels free to paint again with no boundaries.
GF – You have also been developing abstractions that are referencing Chess, that in itself is a rich metaphor for abstract and strategic thought how is this developing in the new wks?
One9 – Chess is a discipline that requires moving to spaces seen and unseen. I love the game Mare, addicted to it in a sense, I play every day online making one move a day against players around the world. In today’s fast paced world where people talk with in short spurts and texts, Chess allows me to still speak in a long thought out visual language that reminds me of painting. In my opinion, I compare playing chess to the battle styles created in the graff world in a sense that you have to create your space in layers, take risks that aren’t seen to your opponent and have the patience to defend and attack in asymmetric broken rhythms. In creating the paintings of the chess pieces I use the same type of fill that I would use in a graff letter or in a chess game. They both feel very similar.
GF – I have to ask about your history as a graffiti writer in Washington DC which is a close cousin to NYC but has rarely been considered for its tradition of writing culture.
One9 – Growing up in the DC area during the 80′s was a special time period in my opinion for various reasons. From a historical point of view DC has been a mecca for musical genius. You had Duke Ellington, Marvin Gaye, Bad Brains and the raw sounds of Go-Go. From a visual standpoint, growing up initially I would see scratch tags from Go-Go names like “Gangsta Chronicles”, “Whats up Woody” and the king of getting up in DC “Cool Disco Dan” to name a few on busses and walls throughout DC. Once “Style Wars” and Subway Art came out I saw a rush of tags everywhere and initial throw ups and eventually burners. For me, this changed my life. This was the crack era in DC and at that time DC was known as the murder capital. A few friends and I had a store on 15th and U St. called ‘HeadFlows’ where we sold clothes made out of hemp, graff supplies and in the back you could buy any type of “lift” you wanted. Our security system was this guy that who just got out of jail who sold guns in the back and walked his 6 pitbulls outside the store. The feel of the city was something raw, gritty and soulful. Go-Go was the juice that pumped throughout city and Hip-Hop and early Punk and Skate culture were all coming together. There were spots like the old 930 club where you could see Trouble Funk with KRS or Organized Confusion and some indie rock band. Allot of writers would get up around these shows and connect and build. From my point of view I was connected to the music first and my writing/painting style was a reflection of what I was seeing and hearing.

It is good to see El Mac and Augustine Kofie getting together again for a new wall. The pair have collaborated on projects in the past, and it is always a pleasure to watch the figurative and geometric styles of both artists. When they collaborate together each brings a signature style, yet work closely together to form a cohesive wall. The red black and white palette was a nice surprise also. Great wall and collaboration. Once again thanks to the Carlos Gonzalez for providing quality pictures.

We had the pleasure of receiving some preview pics and new walls from Mark Lyken. Here are some pictures from his upcoming exhibition at XOYO. We also has some new walls that Lyken has been working on to go along with the paintings. Mark’s explosive work can be described as abstract explosions of color mixed with penetrating lines extending circular strokes of color. A man of many talents Lyken also will be launching an album to go along with the new work. You can see clearly the parallels in his work with music, the rhythm of pulsating circular images mimicking sound vibrating and moving yet standing still. Very impressed with the new work and overall direction Lyken has been moving in. Check out the show summary below.
GF
“Exploring duality in Art & Music, Gamma Proforma’s GP2011 events feature three distinct UK artists with a
common thread, they operate on Dual Channels. Three events at XOYO London during August/September 2011. Each event launches a set of Giclee prints and a soundtrack album by the featured artist. The artists will be in attendance and will perform works at the events. The first 30 attendees at each event will receive a limited edition artist’s pack that includes a signed Giclee print and hand made soundtrack. Support from DJ’s Noel Watson & Nate Thompson plus guests.
Part 2. The Art & Sounds of Lyken – 6.30pm, Friday 26th August 2011 @ XOYO London
Lyken’s layered & gestural work captures turbulent events & cycles along the timeline of a living cosmos. These are worlds within worlds, chemical universes revealed at a microscopic level. His music reflects this same detail, decayed sounds and transmissions shimmer in space, a melodic sea of scientific musical patterns that chime with that certain universal emotion.

We recently read the article Essay: Willem de Kooning and Wildstyle by Daniel Feral on 12ozprophet.com. We wanted to share some quotes from the essay and hope you head over and read the complete essay here. It will be articles like this that will further, and help with the dialogue of our culture. We also hope to contribute more in depth articles and essays throughout the year. They can help educate as well bring new perspectives to look at graffiti. Daniel Feral does an excellent job articulating and referencing some key concepts about graffiti and art history. We are a big proponent of the idea that there are clear similarities to what is happening now and past art history. Its great to see another writer take the time to bring these thoughts to paper in a clear essay. Daniel Feral recently co-curated PANTHEON: A history of art from the streets of NYC Exhibition and continues to write about street art and graffiti as a contributor for 120zprophet.
GF
“Even if the early graffiti writers and street artists did not know who Willem de Kooning was, he and the other Action Painters can still be considered their theoretical and cultural heritage. If nothing else the tendency for any movement to develop from a primitive style to a highly complex expression of the original form is fully evident in the development of Wildstyle in the late seventies from the primitive scrawl of early taggers in the late sixties. Wildstyle, in the late part of the seventies and early eighties, was an apotheosis of style equivalent to the development of Cubism from Fauvism via Symbolism and Impressionism, and also similar to the way AbEx developed from a simpler form geometric abstraction.”
“The Feral Diagram illustrates these connections with a 2-D info-graphic, charting the revolutionary change in Fine Art History as Graffiti and Street Art became the most relevant movement(s) throughout the world, as evidenced by their popularity and influence. As time has passed, because of the successes of the Pop Art movement as well which allowed for the acceptance of the movement into the art world in the first place, Graffiti and Street Art have continued to grow in acceptance and popularity, becoming the most relevant movement of the late twentieth century and at the start of the new millennium.”

Pernyataan Sikap
Sekretariat Bersama Pemulihan Hak Hak Rakyat Indonesia
Lawan Perampasan Tanah dan Ruang Hidup Rakyat!
“Reforma Agraria, Pembaruan Desa dan Keadilan Ekologis Jalan Indonesia Berkeadilan Sosial“
Jakarta, 12-01-2012
