Toyota Yaris Show Off 2011

Click here for bigger image view

Toyota Yaris Show Off is an annual event held by Toyota Astra Motor.
It was a modification contest featuring Toyota’s juicy car, Yaris. This time,
Yaris Show Off Bandung was held in the crowded mall of Paris van Java.
More picture after the jumps.

Prior to the event, I was asked to do some character graffiti on the famous car’s custom body
by Signal Kustom. The car was already modified and looks cool, so I just had to add few
colors and full Yellow Dino graffiti on its body. Our custom car then win several awards
and becoming the King of Yaris Bandung 2011. Thanks to Signal Kustom,
Connection Auto Community and Toyota Astra for the opportunity.

Check out the video of making of the king of yaris 2011 here and

Aaron De La Cruz “Long Walk Home” Exhibition

Aaron De La Cruz recently opened his new Exhibition titled “Long Walk Home” in Hawaii at Loft in Space. Utilizing every inch of wall and even furniture in some occasions, Aaron has transformed the gallery space into his own personal reflection of his past as he contemplates what is next.

The work of Aaron De La Cruz is minimal in nature yet intricately detailed. Working with strong lines and labyrinth like compositions, Aaron is able to speak in a language built of geometric and organic shapes. Patterns start to emerge from what might seem like random markings. The rhythmic and overwhelming paintings start to take over allowing the viewer to see from the artists viewpoint. This is further enhanced in the installation of the artist’s childhood bedroom. The childhood scrawlings on walls have now transformed into a full blown realization of daydreams images and patterns. Working primarily in black ink and paint the confident hand of the artist allows the paintings to have a strong impact. With his brushstroke you are also allowed to watch a genuine and honest painter create marks that have meaning within. A  great showing from Aaaron in this exhibit, and an amazing installation.

Look out for Aaron also in Dec as he will be part of our Art Basel Group Installation.

Matt W. Moore Sun Ray Ricochet in Moscow Russia

Matt W. Moore recently finished a residency in Moscow Russia where he painted and prepared for “Sun Ray Ricochet” an exhibition that was part of Sretenka Design Week. Inspired by the city of Moscow and its dynamic range of color and experience, Matt painted 15 canvases. Half of the canvases were in grey scale, the other half in full color. Matt also was able to build and paint 17 geometric sculptures during his stay. He also was able to get in some walls of course. If you know Matt you know when he comes to work he comes with everything, and gives everything. Being able to paint this much work in one trip is no small task.

The new sculptures painted in his geometric style are my favorite from this new group of work. Matt’s work transitions well into sculpture as the shapes push and reflect creating that illusion of movement. The shifts in color and linear color fields create a dynamic effect of movement with stillness. The sculptures add another layer of dimension that enhances his painterly style. The grey scale paintings and mural are a nice contrast to all the color as they enable your eye to grasp the form without falling in love with the color. Really impressed with the intricacy of the full color pieces. We really like progression of these works, as it seems Matt has found a nice rhythm in his work and these pieces are proof of that fact.

Matt continues to innovate and push not only his art but the art form itself. An amazing showing from Matt W. Moore as he continues to make his name  known around the world. Moscow was lucky to have had this exhibition, and If you live near Moscow make the trek. I know you will love the work more when you see it in person.

How & Nosm “Heartship” Mural and Upcoming Show at Known Gallery “Achtung”

How and Nosm touched down in LA recently as they get ready for their upcoming exhibition at Known Gallery titled “Achtung”. Their first line of business was to paint an enormous wall in Los Angeles as part of the LA Freewalls Project. How & Nosm are no strangers to large scale murals so it was exciting to watch them tackle yet another monster wall. With this new mural installation How & Nosm  show us not only what is capable from our current graffiti artists, but it also shows us how far we have come as a culture. When I look back over the last 20 years I cant remember a time when we had such free reign across the globe on so many monumental walls. It is great to see artists like How & Nosm getting the opportunity to show what is possible. We all know the problems with Los Angeles and its current stance on murals. See Sabers Petition here. It is great that there are still bright spots and organizations like this that are actively securing walls for artists.

Known Gallery seems to be on a roll,  once again they are able bring an important show “Achtung” to Los Angeles. There are not many artists that can go from painting a multi story mural, to painting a canvas and not miss a beat. Most artists have their strengths in one, over the other. How & Nosm fortunately for us do not. Their gallery work is just as important and intense as any mural they paint. Coming from a Graffiti background How & Nosm are able to contribute to the Art world in the same manner they have contributed to ours. By creating  groundbreaking art there is no line between either. We cant wait to see the final opening pictures. We know that it will be impressive and event not to be missed. So Make sure you dont miss it. If you are anywhere near Los Angeles Oct 15th do your self a favor and go.

KONGO x HERMES

Better known internationally by his pseudonym, Kongo, French graffiti artist Cyril Phan recently joined prestigious French fashion house Hermés for the label’s latest art-driven collection. Kongo worked with the label to create “Hermés Graff by Kongo,” a rather unconventional project for the French luxury brand that encompasses a range of silk scarves embellished with lively tag-style prints and patterns. Hermés also tapped the artist to reinvent its window displays with a unique artist installation for its Passeig de Grácia branch in Barcelona. Representing a unique and rare harmony between street art and high fashion, the Hermés Graff by Kongo collection will see a Fall/Winter 2011 release with the Kongo Passeig de Grácia window installation on display from now until October 23.

Alexone Dizac Solo Show Pictures at David Bloch Gallery

Here are pictures from Alex One’s Recent Solo exhibition at David Bloch Gallery. Alex One  paints an abstract fantasy world filled with characters and colorful patterns. The large scale work stands strong with intricate compositions of cartoon figures that flow throughout the paintings. Solidified by reoccurring patterns, the fantasy world seems grounded by these balancing elements of  motifs. Abstract scrawling and graffiti influenced strokes create nice movement to the pieces. All around an impressive showing from Alex One.  Alex One plants himself as a rising contemporary graffiti artist who has transcended his street work into powerful large scale paintings. If you live near Morocco you might want to take some time and go see this impressive show in person. Here is a brief summary of from the Gallery below.

GF

“Like his name the last three letters betray his past of been a tagger,  the work of Alëxone is marked by the indelible mark of graffiti. He became known in the early 90s with his “oediperies” he realizes in the streets , that combine graffiti, and purified calligraphy.

Even now he seems to move away, there is always the stigma of the street in his work. She taught him what is not taught in art school and his work is even more rich.  Over the years, Alëxone has developed a colorful fantasy world, populated by strange animals and characters which he pushes to the extreme deformity. His work is meticulous and detailed, the result of a regular and sustained.”

Works on Paper “Building Context” Group Show at Guerrero Gallery

As we are catching up on our posts, due to being extremely busy the last month or so. We ran across an older post that we had intended to put out. Somehow we managed to let it slip through the cracks. Featured Artists Boris Delta Tellegen and Greg Lamarche were exhibiting at Guerrero Gallery in a group show titled “Building Context“. It is rare that we are able to catch any show here locally that features Boris’s work or Greg’s for that matter. We were bummed that we were not able to make the opening. Luckily the gallery posted some images of the exhibit which we have posted here along with some work from some of the other artists in the show. The artists included Adam Feibelman, Joey Piziali, Boris Tellegen, Matt Gonzalez, Leigh Wells, Greg Lamarche, and Ray Beldner. Here is a quote to briefly describe the show. “an exhibition featuring works by a set of artists who focus on the utilization of the medium of paper in their craft. This show explores and surveys these artists’ various methods of paper manipulation, which lend to uniquely creative existences to a simple material humbly evident in our everyday lives.” Delta’s works on paper are some of the strongest pieces of art that I have seen from the artist. Delta has worked the paper and manipulated to form a very deep, yet light interpretation of his signature geometric style. The scale of paper compared to his immense sculptural pieces does not reflect a letdown in presence as you might think it would. Even in muted and bleached palettes with the simplest of medium paper, Boris shows us what is possible with less. We were hoping to see more of Greg’s work but there were only 2 pieces on the site. Some of Greg’s typographic pieces, and also an abstract work were exhibited. Both pieces show great creating a nice addition and contrast to the other more muted pieces. Very solid additions to the show. There were also some nice works from the other artists involved. Overall the show was very well curated and we only wish we could have attended the event firsthand.

We are looking forward to Optimist’s upcoming solo show at Old Crow Gallery titled Man, Animal and the Machines. Optimist a well rounded Graffiti artist from his intense handstyles to his detailed Pieces. His paintings stand just as strong as his graffiti and extend his reach as an artist into a new medium. Optimist’s photo realistic paintings reflect a constant dialogue from the artist about materialism, capitalism and its constant force upon nature. The artist will be exhibiting 8 new paintings for the exhibit. Optimist also was interviewed recently by The Citrus Report you can read the full interview here. If you get a chance to make the show, do so you will be glad you did.

“Fast Forward” Group Show Opening Images Sueme Suiko Poesia Jaybo Bam Robz

If you are in San Francisco make sure to check out “Fast Forward” which includes new work from Sueme, Poesia, Jaybo Monk, Mike Bam, Suiko and Robz at 1am Gallery. Here are some Images from the opening and detail shots of some of the work that was exhibited. Titled Fast Forward the exhibit asked the question, what would graffiti look like in the distant future. The artists were chosen based upon the progressive nature of their work. Having in common a graffiti background the artists have all been able to elevate and evolve their work to a new point of reference in this show. The vast contrast of styles, from figurative to abstract was this shows strength. Jaybo Monk shows us the perfect balance between figure and form, geometry and composition. In his painting walking silence Jaybo twists our perception of space with rotating portraits and silhouettes creating the imperfect perfection that we love. Japanese artist Suiko blends color with organic shapes based on his letter forms. His motion of line and clear rendering of color create some very strong pieces. When looking towards the future Poesia first takes us back with new paintings from his reinterpretations of old masters series. His detailed and rendered Old master paintings surrounded by geometric forms and color build a dialogue with the viewer allowing them to contemplate first the past before looking at the future. Solidifying the idea of color and form Poesia correlates the relationships of graffiti with that of arts forgotten masterpieces. Sueme builds space with shape, or the lack there of it. In his triangular geometric pieces Sueme has added some nice texture and an atmospheric feel that compliments the structured mass of triangles. Really like this new addition to his work. The show was curated by Mike Bam who also was showing some highly detailed canvases. His work focused on a futuristic look at what graffiti might look like in tomorrows world, complex and angular lines pulled together by great use of color. Overall this exhibit delivered and we look forward to seeing more work from all the artists involved. You can see more pictures here. Thanks to Scott La Rockwell for all pictures.

GF

“It is an exciting time for the graffiti scene. Walls are being taken down and boundaries are being pushed beyond their limits… This evolution is fusing old with new school, graffiti with fine art. An innovative and fresh art form is emerging that has collectors and fans asking for more.

1AM and curator, Mike Tyau, are pleased to present “Fast Forward”, a group exhibition that captures the progressive evolution of spray can a…rt. The collection includes works from Jaybo Monk from Germany, Suiko from Japan, Sueme from Canada and Poesia, Robz, and Bam from the Bay Area. In the past year, 1AM has showcased graffiti’s roots with the exhibition “The Classics” and present form with “Outside In”. “Fast Forward” is a journey into the future and an imagining of what graffiti as an art form can and will be. Immersed in the experimental, this exhibition aims to excite and surprise fans, artists, and collectors, alike, of the controversial medium’s progression.”

We are putting on events and paint jams around the globe with artists and like minds, then releasing limited edition runs of prints on our favourite canvas; the humble white tee shirt. T-Shirts and prints will feature artwork created for or inspired by each event.”

Eric Haze “New Mathematics” at Known Gallery

Haze “New Mathematics” opened at Known Gallery this past week. Here are the pictures courtesy of Carlos Gonzalez. When we read Mare 139′s post about the upcoming exhibition in his blog we knew it would be tough to follow such a genuine and in depth look at the show. Well we figured why even try. Here is Mare 139′s full post about the show from his blog. Enjoy

“Haze and I have been friends and brothers in the struggle since
we shared a platform in style wars in the early 1980’s and ever since that point in time Ive
come to appreciate his dedication to craft as both a designer and fine artist.

Over the years, Haze has mastered a strong command for the graphic line,
knowing that the discipline and control of that line equates to
clarity and effective branding. This is how he has been able to distinguish his
career as a designer of visually identifiable products and logos for
many corporations and more importantly the HAZE brand itself, so it is from this point that we must begin to
appreciate his arrival to the current body of work.

When I walked into Hazes studio for a visit with him and his assistant
Carl just prior to the shipping of his new works I was overwhelmed
both by the amount of works on paper and canvas as much as by the
tremendous leap of faith and investment in a totally new direction. It
was a statement of confidence to break from the minimalist works of
his past into a newer and more impassioned and expressive space. The
variation of line work, which constitutes his focus, shows that he
still retains that discipline and is willing to venture deeper into
geometric abstractions the likes that echo early modernism. But not to
be referential he works within the language he knows best,
iconography, style writing, and typography, we can see how if taken all
together he is able to tether these works from his history but not let
them be anchored to it. The new math is multiplying lines, icons,
movements and compositions, these layered affects are not merely
studio exercises but as I eluded earlier they are cumulative of all the
previous works added up.

Ive seen his work evolve over the past few years with a deliberate
patience and focus. By allowing his work to ease into its own space he
has been able to venture out of the comfort zone of both graphic
design and applied medium with The New Mathematics. We saw hints of
this in his 2009 New Abstracts and Icons exhibition in NYC, where Haze
presented very stark and graphic canvases and drawings with a focus on
application and iconography, particularly with the circle and square
paintings and crowns which clearly displayed his command of the brush
and geometric compositions. Taken as a whole the show marked a
starting point in which we would reconsider what his work was and
would become. Eluding to this new math was a series of charcoal and
ink drawings, it is these works that suggested high abstraction would
be the most logical step forward in his work. After that show and many
conversations there after I kept considering that his strength as a
painter lies not in his discipline but the in the challenge of
allowing an undisciplined line to drive his work, that the memory of
his movements be erased and that he would summon the trust of his
talents to lead him into new territory. This is no easy task for any
artist to consider let alone execute, moving out of a comfort zone in
the making and business of art is a risk for many, yet it is my
personal opinion and shared with Haze that if we do not learn from our
works and build upon them we will stifle potential and progress and
here is where his new math adds up.

Simple math predicts conclusive and predictable outcomes, with Eric
Hazes New Mathematics exhibition he summarizes the net results of his
years of graphic and fine art work to convey a new algorithm of line and
geometry that if not a final equation a fair warning of whats to come.”

Opening Night Pictures of “Young & Free” Exhibition at 941 Geary San Francisco

Here are some pictures from the opening of “Young & Free” which opened last week at 941 Geary in San Francisco. In the words of their site “Young & Free will be the most significant exhibition by Australian street artists ever seen in the United States. The show will feature fresh work by thirteen of Australia’s finest urban art guerrillas – from the already internationally acclaimed to the burgeoning up-and-comers.

This tribe of artists comes from a variety of backgrounds: brilliant new work by notorious 80’s train painters through to the sublime subtlety of a modern day Rembrandt armed with a spray can.

Young & Free is a reflection of Australia’s thriving street culture with a strong grounding in the past and a firm focus on the future. These artists are modern day bushrangers, patrolling the lane from Melbourne to Manhattan.”

We had seen a nice buildup of press for the event. With a talented roster of artists like this which included Anthony Lister, Kid Zoom, Dabs Myla, Dmote, New2, Ben Frost, Meggs, Ha-Ha, Reka, Rone, Sofles and Vexta at a large gallery like 941 Geary, we expected some great work to be showcased. We were not able to attend, but by looking at the pictures of the event courtesy of Mike Bam it seemed to be a very diverse showing of artists. Under the title of street art, we were glad to see some top graffiti artists taking part in the show. It is always nice to see writers being acknowledged and given the opportunity to exhibit alongside some of the more revered street artists. Overall we really liked the contrast of all the artists different styles involved. Each sticking to their strengths even in a group environment was nice to see. This looked to be more than just another group show. I applaud the curator for taking the direction of building a true group exhibition. Group exhibitions can become very singular at times, the overall feeling of this show seemed to be more cohesive. Even with so many differing styles it worked. Great job all around.
