Exhibit Pictures Mode2 & Stash Galleri Kleerup

Mode 2 and Stash recently Exhibited in Stockholm Sweden at Galleri Kleerup. Stash showcases some new abstract works while Mode 2 comes strong with his signature figurative work. I really like the gestural paintings from Mode 2. Here is a quote from stash below about the show.

GF

“What happens when your shipping company messes up and doesn’t deliver; leaving you stranded and empty-handed? How are you going to do that show? Well, in our line of work; we improvise. This is not to say that we do any old crap to fill in, or get into some kind of uncontrolled panic. From a tag which would take just five seconds, to a full colour piece which could take five hours, the goal has always been to show the best of our abilities.

We would go to train yards without sketches or any preconceptions, and we´ll let the setting and the pressure of the illegality, as well as the near-darkness, inspire and guide us in our noble endeavour. These conditions of urgency have often shaped and moulded our form of expression, opening up new avenues and showing us new directions to follow…”

Sat One Solo Show “Chromolog” Firstlines Gallery

Sat One recently exhibited new work for his recent solo show titled “Chromolog” at Firstlines Gallery in Munich Germany. Sat One has established himself as a premier muralist. He takes time away from painting walls and focuses his attention on canvas. Abstract at first glance, but as you look closer or as you step away in Sat One’s case the picture shows itself. Form is hidden in intersecting colors, composition gives way to shapes of soft geometry. This soft geometry is one of my favorite part of Sat One’s work, scaled down to a canvas size the details create patterns. These patterns accidental in nature at at times resemble microscopic landscapes, and at distance resonating shapes of color. It is the earthly palette and clean execution that pull the work all together. A great showing of work from Sat One. Congrats! Show summary below.

GF

“Sat One was born in 1977 in Venezuela and grew up in Munich. A trained graphic designer discovered early his interest in graffiti, but steadily developed a style that denies remote historically evolved forms and imagery, the supposedly superficial beauty. Sat One designed with its non-Euclidean geometric abstractions and futuristic-looking forms a formal but not tangible world, a world in which the spatial effect exists but is not predetermined by classical laws of physics in severity. Sat One tightrope walk between clarity and futuristic constructivist rejection of classical ideas recites defined geometry, microscopic forms, visualizes bold visionary unphysical or ban, in the style of classic science fiction, fantasy and reality to hyperspace on canvas. Sat One appears with its complexity and its precision as an architect of a parallel existing reality, in which the physical form of their building materials, away from earthly gravity, manifesting only in their combination.

Space without dimension, shape, without mass and time are not necessarily linear – the strange and inscrutable, incomprehensible remains immanent and accompanied us on imaginary journeys.”

KOSMOPOLITE PARIS 2011

KOSMOPOLITE ART TOUR 2011

After 10 memorable editions highlighting diversity, exchange and intercultural enrichment, Kosmopolite has become a major event and reference in the graffiti world acting as an ambassador for Street Art and Graffiti, ever reaching out to a wide and international audience. By taking root in urban reality, graffiti as a budding form of artistic expression and experimentation undeniably takes part in the challenging of our contemporary cities’ functional and dysfunctional processes.

In 2011, from Jakarta to Sao Paulo, Graffiti takes center stage for this new edition of the Kosmo Art Tour. In Paris and Bagnolet, artists shall work hand in hand to allow each and every one of us to enjoy graffiti’s artistic wealth and diversity. With a novel collaboration between the Kosmopolite and Paris Hip Hop festivals, the Kosmo Art Tour 2011 inaugurates a new approach to cultural exchange and transmission both in France and throughout the world. With its rebellious but ever reaching out artists, Graffiti takes special care this year in extending its support to the victims of the Japanese Tsunami. An action inspired and led by the artists is therefore organized in favor of Japan.

*Update New Video Smash 137 “Grow Up” Solo Exhibit Pictures

Gallery Celal in Paris recently showcased artist Smash 137 for a solo show titled “Grow Up”.  Smash 137 who recently we had a conversation with in a here, has been able to successfully move from the streets into the Gallery seamlessly. This recent solo exhibition is a testament to his emerging role as a painter.

When we look at the work of Smash there is so much to appreciate, color, flow, letter structure. These adjectives might be words you would normally associate with a graffiti piece. The difference is they are describing his paintings, and the importance is they are paintings that are able to capture the spirit of graffiti. Abstract in nature yet fundamentally sound, when you look at them from a graffiti perspective.

One of the major qualms I have with the art world is its lack of understanding for our art form, or its broad definition of the term graffiti. Most galleries will use artists or the catch phrase graffiti art to hit whatever niche they think is hot. What they rarely do is take the time to understand the true essence of the artform. The small nuances and complexity of our culture is something that I would hope in the future more art historians and critics would take time to understand. They can start with the work of Smash.

When I look over the work of Smash 137 in this exhibit, it is an example of graffiti art done correctly on canvas. In a art world where artists paint about graffiti through photo-realist versions of what they think graffiti looks like. It is great to see an artist paint about graffiti using the nuances of graffiti as a starting point. Not only has he painted some amazing pieces, he has also captured the essence of what we do. The control of a fatcap, the fluid motion of a one time line. Clean and crisp. In the same manner a master establishes a pure brushstroke that captures the artists imperfect hand.  The work of Smash 137 you are allowed to see our version of for example a bamboo brush and you are able to correlate this to his strokes with a spray can. The essence of the stroke is a key underlying principle not only in say Japanese ink drawings, but also in our culture as well with say a fatcap.  Great work and a very solid show. Respect.

Kosmo Art Tour Jammin’

Last December 4th, Indonesian and European street artists united to bomb one wall in Jakarta area. Lazoo, Kongo, Besok, Kims, Darbotz, Nsane5, Hest1, Older, Netic, Shake, Koma, Tutu and Wormo joined the force and beat the unbearable sunny day for the love of graffiti. Check out the before and after photos!

Before:

After:

4 days after, when I passed by the exact same wall, the wall was still there but the historical graffiti is wiped out clean. I found out later that it was used for a brand’s promotional purpose. Next time you want to bomb a wall, better check the story behind the original wall first. You wouldn’t crush a diamond and coat it with gold; why would you destroy a work of art? Street artist’s artworks are displayed on the streets and for the streets. Respect the art, the culture and the people.

RRREC FEST #2 Music / Movie / Bazaar / Exhibition

RRREC FEST #2

Music / Movie / Bazaar / Exhibition

RRREC FEST bukan sekadar perhelatan musik.

Kurator RRREC FEST #2 adalah The Secret Agents.

RRREC FEST #2

Music / Movie / Bazaar / Exhibition

ruangrupa proudly brings you back RRREC FEST (ruangrupa Record Festival) in Jakarta on 3rd – 5th December 2011. The festival was firstly held at the beginning of 2011 as part of Decompression #10 ruangrupa’s 10th Anniversary. The premier RRREC FEST was very successful, attended by more than two thousands audiences that crowded National Gallery of Indonesia for two days.

This event is not merely ordinary music event. Since the beginning, the festival came with statement about the importance of alternative spirit, not only in music scene but also in other cultural production activities. This spirit shall create the space for many creations along with fresh and inspiring ideas.

This time, RRREC FEST #2 is held in three days, where in the third day all the band performances will be divided in 5 locations alongside Cikini. The fifth venue is Kineforum (at TIM), which is where music related videos are screened, as ‘ruru.mov’ program. The purpose of this event, like the first one, is to document the energy of a generation within the music culture; whether as audio, in video, or to be recorded in the soul of all the music fans whom will be witnessing the event. RRREC FEST #2 also intends to showcase local independent musicians and bands with ‘that special something’, to more people; as well as other Asian and international bands. Besides music, RRREC FEST #2 also engaged all kinds of other creative activities, such as: a unique bazaar, merchandise, posters – murals – stickers exhibitions, video screenings, photography, etc. The curators of RRREC FEST #2 are The Secret Agents.

For the RRREC FEST #2, The Secret Agents had curated 26 local and international most inspiring and cross-genre bands / performers; from folk, pop, new wave, rock, experimental to electronic. RRREC FEST #2 specifically celebrates the richness of contemporary Southeast Asia, a region that geopolitically has significant role in global map culture. The festival also invites musicians from United States, Hong Kong and Finland. This multicultural panorama reflects the commitment of RRREC FEST in creating spaces to the exchange of ideas, spirits and creativities for the musicians, artists and audiences.

For three days, Cikini area becomes the main site of RRREC FEST #2. Besides its high historical value which is very important for Jakarta, Cikini Raya provides proper infrastructures: cozy sidewalks for pedestrians, various cafes and restaurants with warm ambiance, Jakarta Arts Centre and a legendary bakery in town that keeps our memory. RRRECT FEST conceives all of these aspects as “precious local heritages” that shall be appreciated and enjoyed together.

Four different stages located in Cikini (Tan Ek Tjoan, Tjikini, Taman Ismail Marzuki) and Thamrin (The Jaya Pub) are available during the festival. Stage-out spotted on the yard of Jakarta’s Theater, Taman Ismail Marzuki, offers high level of festive energy along with bazaar of Jakarta’s young artists. Stage-in held intimately inside cafes and a legendary patisserie. At the last day, whole performances are held at the same time with hope-in concept.

In collaboration with Kineforum, RRREC FEST #2 also presents ruru.mov, the film and video screening program. Specifically, the 2nd ruru.mov program (the first one was held together with
